Pirates of the Spanish Main, the second table

tutorial30 tutorial30 tutorial30

Hosting the game “Pirates of the Spanish Main” for two days at a Dutch convention eventually resulted in handing the table over to the Dutch distributor of this game. Since I like to play the game I started to work on a second pirates table.

This second table is again round bit 3 inches less in diameter. What makes it so special to actually make another table that is 3 inch smaller in diameter? Simply, the MDF board I bought at the tool shed did not fit in my wife’s car. Had I been with my car it would fit so you see how insignificant things can become significant when it comes to shaping things.
I used the same colours for this table as I did on the first. However I did add green to the colour range this time.

My first series of islands where a bit moderate in shape, colour setting and sometimes a bit too big to my taste. With this in mind I started working on this next series that has more diversity in shape and colour and are overall smaller sized.

The designs of these islands are somewhat different. On most islands you can see 2 or more bays or beaches that are not connected. I did this on purpose so I can add more variety in to the game. I can imagine ships that explore islands partially so in some cases ships have to sail around island to reach other parts of the island to explore those beaches.
Having a home island with more then one beach or bay means that you will have to pick the beach that is your home port as where other beaches do not count as docking at your home port or island.

This series of islands is 16 pieces in total. Another series will be made if new rules ask for specific features on islands that can not be implemented in these islands.

"Teardrop Island"

island132

It was Lady Gwenn Cornwall who lived on this island after she married Captain James Cornwall of the English Navy. They settled on this Island a little over 100 years ago but from the day she set foot on this island she longed to get back to England. Alas she never saw her beloved England again. 3 years after her arrivel she threw her self from one of the cliffs to lift the grief she felt. From that day on this island is known as “Teardrop Island”.

"Bounty Island"

island132

A well known island to the smuggling kind. Its location makes it a save haven for those who want to avoid contact with the large fleets of European nations. Winds and currents are favourable here. Combined with this high landmark that is perfect for spotting naval activity, many merchandise is transported through this island. This island also has a huge natural storage facility in the form of numerous cave systems.

“Humpback Island”

island132

This is the isle of the great whales since you can see these big sea creatures from its shores almost all year round. This island is also known for its strange birds as the Kwamiki Long Leg and the Swirambukali. This last bird is close to extinction since its feathers are most wanted for dressing up the great hats of important scum like swashbucklers and other important low live scum of the Caribbean.

“Saint Luna” (Moon Island)

island132

The cliffs of this island make it unapproachable, except for the eastern opening that leads to “Hidden Bay”. Pirates dwell here from time to time. The island can be defended well since there is only one way in. This is also its weak point since it is also the only way out.

“Bone Dog Island”

island132

The story tells us that Captain Black Hawk Scarecrow and Captain Cross Fire claimed this Island to be theirs. While Black Hawk occupied the north western shores, Cross Fire occupied the south eastern shores. This dispute was settled during a duel that took place high above waters on top of the archway on the island. While this duel took place, Captain Grog Dogleg destroyed the ships of the rivalling Captains, banned them and claimed the island to be his. The fact that this island looks like a bone is purely coincidence.

“Cathedral Island”

island132

The highest rock face in this area of the Caribbean is called “Cathedral Rock” and can be found on this island. Being the remains of an ancient volcano, all its formations are solid lava rock. This makes the island very fertile and gives it its paradise look. The island is remarkable shaped with its many beaches and tentacle like ridges. Fierce battles have been fought in obtaining control of this majestic island.

“New Holland”

island132

Indeed the Dutch (simply had to add a Dutch touch) had their trading post on this island. Admiral van Dijk was commissioned to look over all the trading activities in the region. A minor point of the Admiral was his addiction to gambling. One day he lost his wife due to a poker game and in order to win her back he offered the island as his next bet. Well he lost and was forced to leave. His wife stayed behind most willingly and married the lucky winner.

“Compass Island”

island132

The shape of this island is like the pointing needle of a compass and besides that it seems to point perfectly North. The fact is that the direction in which the rock formation points, isn’t exactly North. It has not even the shape of a compass needle! However it is said that poor sailors indeed used the rock formation as guidance. Sailing two days straight from this island in the direction it points out, brings you to the closest next island. Strange thing about this is that this story seems to be true and does indeed works but only in one direction. This might have to do with the strong currents that happen to go the same direction as the rock formation points out.

“Snake Island”

island132

Its name is obvious since the mountain range of this island looks like the body of a snake. Legends tell that the two shores of this island are connected through a complex of caves that run deep under the mountain range. It is this tail that explains how “Mad Merk the Beserk” (the most fearsome and unmerciful backstabber of his time) could flee from the strong arm of the law by switching shores on which he both had hidden small fast ships. After more then 30 years his reign of terror abruptly stopped when he choked in a peanut.

“The Desolate Isles”

island132

These island are no more then just large sand plates with poor vegetation and some disorientated sand lizards. Many ships have stranded in these shallow waters with a risk of never being able to leave again. (some of these sand lizards are quite well fed)

“Tailbone Island”

island132

This was the first island occupied by the Spanish. It was Commodore Guan Carlo de la Cruz who discovered this Island and named it Mupé’ès (Multo Petito Espanjol) The most remote island he named “Guan Carlo”, the island in the middle “La Cruz”, the bay “Carlo Bay” and the rock was called “Guan Montana”. Then the Pirates came, threw la Cruz of the island and named it “Tailbone Island” because it looks like one. Pirates do have simple solutions when it comes to naming islands.

“Corona Island”

island132

The remains of a former Portuguese settlement can still be found here. The fact that it is deserted simply has to do with the giant wave that swept this island about 20 years ago. There seems to be one survivor still living on this island on top of the Grand Corona. It is said he calls himself Robinson Crusoe.

“Hammertoe Island”

island132

Also known as “Claw Island” has a number of unexplored little islands that gives this island its somewhat awkward look. Since the waters around the smaller islands are shallow, ships do need to sail quite a route to get from bay to bay. It was swashbuckler Captain Big Boots that used this island as his base. If this has something to do with the name of this islands is not certain. One thing we do know about Captain Big Boots was that his left boot was a lot bigger then his right boot.
