October 28, 2003:

I have this rather strange idea that I would like to share with all of you.
I was thinking of starting a community project. I know there is already the Havergast topic but I thought about adding a community project maybe within the Havergast setting.

- Let me explain:

I would like to start on a new project (besides other projects that are currently running) So could it be possible to start a project that in the end will be created by YOU! With you I mean all who want to participate.

- This is what I would like to suggest;

I want to make a large bridge. This bridge could be 30 to 40 inch long. I am not sure how wide the bridge will be but I know I want to built a bridge that, if you stand on the bridge, looks like a normal bridge if you look at the left. If you look at he right you will see all these buildings that stand half upon the bridge and half in the water or hanging over the railing of the bridge. An irregular set of houses or shops with turrets different types of roofs, windows and made out of all kinds of combinations of material like wood, plastered walls, chipped stone etc.

Actually it must be a large scenery piece that you can place at the end of a table as being a nice background. A bridge implements a river but it can also be that in front of this bridge there is a lake.

- A possible start:

We discuss a possible first layout. I start building and will work out suggestions that we generally agree upon and add updates on a regular base on my website in this special topic, “HA Community Project”. I think it is fun because in this way I have the feeling that I am not working on a project alone. If you want to join you simply join and if you want to step in later (or step out) you just do so. Rule is that I can make alterations to the project in order to keep the project workable.

Another challenge within this project is that I can imagine that some of you come up with ideas that can not be realised with the existing HA blocks. This I see as an additional challenge. So lets say we agree on a wooden beam structure on top of this stone base we might want to have certain sculpted beams or gargoyles. If we all agree on adding features like that I will try to add them as well.

Tell me if you like the idea. The fun here is also that the participation level could mean that more of us are building the same structure at the same time, using the same input.

OK this is it for now. I stick with this bridge/housing thing. Now lets see what happens.

Frontal view of this optional bridge:

I tried to make this first possible frontal view of the bridge. I think I will start making three pillars and 2 arches to start with. Once that is done I want to actually start building structures upon the bridge. I guess it would be nice to have one site that mostly looks like a normal bridge with maybe one spot that has also a building on that side. On the other side there will be this range of structures with a possible see thru. (Railing of the bridge)

At the top of the picture I laid out a possible aerial view of how the bridge could look at a possible point. On the left there is the railing of the bridge with in front the top of the pillar. From left to right we see a 3” wide walkway. I can imagine this walkway changing from 3” wide to 4 or 5 “wide and grow narrow again. Maybe even some gate could be made on the bridge.
Then comes a wall from a certain structure and the inside of this structure represented by these 3 smooth 1” stones. The next wall is the actual other side of the bridge. The remaining 2,5”is still this built structure upon the bridge, hanging over the railing supported by a beam structure or maybe it is built down along side the pillar .

As I said I am just playing around with some possibilities here and this is the way I normally design my projects. I build by the inch. You never know what lies ahead.

A second attemp:

The feedback on the first attempt was clear. Imagine you will build houses upon the bridge; in that case the pillars look too fragile. I maintained the height of the pillar but made it on the low end one inch wider. The pillar will stick out a bit more also although you can not see this too well in this picture. The head statue on top of the pillar will stand by it self and does not stick to the wall behind it.

I thought the project over and I do no want this project to be too massive and too large. I can imagine houses or structures being built on the bride at the height of the pillars. In between two pillars there can also be some structures but maybe in a way that they are smaller or pretend to be made of lighter material.

So what should I alter next on this attempt. If there is no need for altering then te next question is how wide the bridge must be. I did lay out this suggested size in the first picture.

November 01, 2003:

Now the pillar of the bridge looks a bit more “sturdier” (as TheMoMH) states it, I will now focus on how wide the bridge possible must be. Werepug’s suggestion sounds good so with this input I did this lay out of a possible bridge section looking from above.

The walkway on the bridge is in this situation 4” wide. Enough for actually having some traffic action on the bridge. The building (with the front and back wall) is 4”, with a possible 2.5”overlap over the bridge itself.
The walkway as well as the space for housing can differ depending on the type of structures there will be built on the bridge.

I calculated that when building a 40” long bridge, I need to build 4 pillars with possible 8 arches. (4 on either side) I made a possible layout of a pillar as well again seeing it from the top. To make the pillar look even sturdier I widened the pillar in the middle. Although in this case it sticks out only a quarter inch more on both sides, it gives me a feeling that the pillar is even stronger.
The form of the pillar will be maintained for 2” in height. Ten the pillar will be slimmer. Another fun thing I came up with is the possibility to pace a door, a window or even an arch in the centre part of the pillar. (There where the pillar is at his widest)

I need a lot of specific stones for the pillars. (if we decide to go for such a pillar) If so then it will take me about a week to get all the casts done.
I await further instructions.

November 08, 2003:

I finished two pillars so far.
The bridge section is 8.5” wide of which I used 4” as a possible walkway. The two pillars are exactly the same and I think these are the only ones that have this form. A possible third pillar could have one side as the other two (front) and a structure that comes from the river up to the top of the bridge. You can think of a round FS tower that is incorporated in the pillar it self. This first bridge section is again just a set up.

The other part (the part that is not covered yet, beside the walkway) can be filled with housing (one or two) combined with more surfaces to walk over. It can be so that the structures hang over the bridge’s edge. Please let me know what kind of structures you would like to see on the bridge and from what material.
As I see it now the bridge will get a third pillar and depending on the input the bridge could grow further. I am not in a hurry here so depending on suggestions and input I will keep on working on this project.

Another question is this:
How does the ending of the bridge looks like?
Is it a sort of tower or house with internal or external stairs?

Please feel free to comment and suggest and I will keep on building.
